The Blogger’s HEALTH
- Hereditary cholesterol & blood sugar issues plus weight control are the Blogger’s health issue
- UPDATE: MAY 2024:
Please note: (This is the response of an individual who is not used to taking pharmaceuticals and will always prefer complementary medicine.). After more than a year on experimental lipids and latterly a pre-diabetic programme designed to lower the risk of diabetes, the Blogger's cholesterol levels fell to the lowest ever. Incidences of leg cramps were increasing, however, and the tablets were temporarily halted to see how cholesterol would respond. So far weight is stable though waistline not so svelte. An unexpected change: what were considered normal'ish moods lifted sharply.
- Statins have been unsuccessful but a recent trial of a remedy reducing cholesterol absorption, not cholesterol production (started 2023) has seen brilliant results. (Details: Royal Free Hospital, Pond Street, Hampstead, London: Attention: MetabolicDepartment of Clinical Biochemistry. Email: rf.tr.lipidclinic Unit@NHS.net. Attention: Dr Kim)
- Blood sugar. Due mainly to genetic diabetes, the Blogger is pre-diabetic (controlled). Cutting out refined sugar and reducing carbs works well but is difficult to commit to. Also, the usual cure, low-carb, high protein diets, are unsuitable for cholesterol-phobes who are lactose intolerant (the Blogger). 2024: embarked on an experimental NHS pre-diabetic programme designed to prevent diabetes. Emphasis on lower carbs difficult due to lactose intolerance plus committed exercise programme but am slowly developing a food plan that meets my personal needs. The Blog has also begun to create and test vegetarian recipes, some with the texture and flavour of meat, for this group of people.
- Weight: The Blogger's weight has stabilised; worries about a fat-bottom have eased, probably due to exercise 5-6 days a week.
BACKGROUND:
- The Blogger was one of the first women TV/Radio News reporter/writers in Canada, London & Hong Kong. She later worked in finance, at a fledgling tech company and co-authored a book on Exchange Rates with an economist. The Blogger has honours degrees in Chinese (Mandarin) & Health Sciences (Homoeopathy).
- Extensive travel as a young adult meeting people at all levels led to a determination to ‘pay back’ by helping others. She was a political volunteer, helped veterans at a military charity and volunteered with the Ukraine war effort.
- After a decade’s work as a freelance chef, she set up and ran a Lottery funded lunch club in a deprived area of London. Her no-paywall blog: 67GOINGON50 (.blogspot.com) ‘Healthy Eating & Growing Old Gracefully’ has thousands of global viewers, including all ages and occupations.
HOW DID I GET SO YOUNG?
Possibly 'clean living'? The Blogger doesn't smoke (though in her 20's puffed her my way through 20-a-day). She drinks a little. She has a strong spiritual side, meditating 30 minutes mostly twice a day. She has exercised vigorously since her 20's.
Stamina has decreased as she grows older but a good night's sleep and a day off a week works wonders.
Given a choice, and a long-time interest in complementary health, the Blogger will go first for remedies based on complementary medicine, particularly Homeopathy.
Her Honours science degree in Health Sciences (Homoeopathy) involving pre-med courses taken with pre-med students, and some nutritional training contributes to a sense of well-being. (During the intensive three-year degree, she spent hundreds of hours treating patients under supervision in a clinical setting and briefly practised homoeopathy.) She sometimes has lively and frank discussions with doctors.
THE BLOGGER'S AGE
She is in her 70's but has not changed the title of the blog. In fact, she has stopped counting birthdays. A woman's prerogative and all that. The principle, however, holds: she is much younger and more energetic than her age.
It is the "...goingon50" part that may become a problem. If the blog is about to contravene the Trades Descriptions Act, the blog's viewers will be the first to know.
- Catering is in the family; two relatives either ran or are running well regarded restaurants
- The Blogger spent ten years in high-end catering in London in hotels, City dining rooms and banqueting
- Physical appearance was important during careers in the the media, banking, public relations and complementary medicine
- Once upon a time, the Blogger was runner up to a popstar in a Rear of the Year competition
