BEST-EVER SIDES, CHRISTMAS 2019 AND BEFORE


The best of this and previous years' side dishes for the Festive season...


Some of these dishes are glamorous and sophisticated, a few are showstoppers, many are simple and easily made.  Quite a few can be made now and frozen for Christmas Day.

Several are skinnier: lower in fat, low/no sugar, with lots of heart-friendly fibre.  Several are frugal or budget friendly.

The dishes from 2015 to 2018 come up again and again in 67's stats.  The dishes for 2019 were enthusiastically received by tasters and readers of the blog.

STUFFING

67 has never managed to make a decent bread stuffing, though there have been plenty of good ones in other people's homes.  The blogger's alternative Asian-style rice stuffing proved popular:

For those who deeply dislike conventional stuffing.  Contains sticky rice studded with celery, bamboo shoots, water Chestnuts & Chinese mushrooms.  Vegan with optional carnivore additions.

SALADS

RADISH SALAD

Salad 1: Radish 

Sliced and dressed in this way, the radishes don't even taste of radish!

Cost: £1.00
Serves: 4-6 as side, easily multiplied 


2 cups (1x 200gm/7oz) thinly sliced radish, common garden or mixed
coarsely ground black pepper
1/4 cup creamy lemon or lime dressing
2 tbsp parsley, chives or mint
1/4 cup nuts or seeds (opt) but adds something special to the flavour & texture



Creamy lemon or lime dressing
   2 tbsp strained 0-fat yoghurt
   1 tbsp mayonnaise
   1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
   1/2 tsp lemon or lime juice or white wine vinegar
   1/2 tsp finely grated lemon zest 
   1/4-1/2 tsp sugar (opt)
   pepper & salt 

An hour or two before serving, mix ingredients.  Refrigerate.




Cabbage Carrot Slaw with Peanut Lime Dressing:  Crunchy Vegan, raw & cooked veg in peanut-y dressing, prep ahead
 Serve dressing on the side and it'll keep, refrigerated, two days 

Trio of Single Vegetable Salads: Either Radish or Cucumber or Lettuce on their own with sassy dressings, frugal, fast

Oriental Crudites: healthy, pretty, appealing; kids will enjoy making these
